Federation of Thai Industries Puts Flood Damage to Industry at 6 Billion Baht; Assemblers' Parts Stocks Last Until October 12
BANGKOK — Floods in Thailand have caused an estimated 6 billion baht (about $178 million) of damage to industry, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said on October 7, adding that car assemblers currently hold enough parts inventory to last until October 12. The assessment came as the Thai Meteorological Department forecast the same day that another monsoon burst would bring thunderstorms to most of Thailand, including Bangkok, from October 10 to 12.
The losses are mainly a supply-chain story: floodwaters inundated supplier plants and logistics routes, and Toyota Thailand has halted production at three plants since October 5. The federation warned that if the waters do not recede within the week, more factories will be forced to stop and the damage figure will rise. Thailand is Southeast Asia's car-making hub, and vehicles and parts are pillars of its exports — every week of industrial stoppage will show up in trade data.
Alongside the industrial toll, the human toll kept climbing: Reuters reported on October 7 that flooding since September 16 has killed 60 people, up from 31 published three days earlier, with some 1.15 million households affected across 28 provinces. The disaster has spread from the north and centre to more regions.
For the Thai government, the coming week is a double test: flood rescue and recovery continue, while the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings open in Bangkok on October 12, bringing more than 15,000 participants to the capital. Whether industrial losses can be contained, and whether Bangkok's flooding can be brought under control before the meetings, are Thailand's two most-watched questions this week.
