PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden on Oct. 7 extended the state's National Guard deployment assisting federal immigration enforcement through September 2027, prolonging a mission that has made the state one of the most active participants in the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, KWIT reported.
The extension continues the deployment of South Dakota Guard personnel supporting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations. Rhoden, who took office in January 2025, has been among the most vocal Republican governors backing the administration's immigration agenda, and he framed the deployment as a public safety partnership between the state and federal authorities. The governor's office said Guard members provide logistical, administrative and operational support to ICE agents.
South Dakota is one of several Republican-led states — including Texas, Florida and Louisiana — that have sent Guard troops to assist federal immigration enforcement since the administration ramped up deportation operations in 2025. The year-long extension keeps the mission in place well past the November midterm elections, a signal that the state expects the federal enforcement campaign to continue regardless of the election outcome.
