Trump Signs Major Disaster Declaration for Utah After Cottonwood Fire and Floods
President Donald Trump on October 7 signed a major disaster declaration for Utah covering the June 2026 Cottonwood Fire and the flooding and mudslides that followed in July, unlocking Federal Emergency Management Agency public assistance funding for eligible entities in Beaver and Piute counties.
The two rural southern Utah counties were hit with a one-two punch this summer: a devastating wildfire followed by severe flooding and mudslides on the burned terrain. On July 19, a flash flood wave reached Interstate 15 and extended five to six miles west of Beaver, forcing a complete closure of the interstate for nearly 12 hours. A joint damage assessment identified at least $47 million in possible eligible damages.
