Hurricane Rachel to Turn Toward Southern California This Weekend; Dangerous Surf First

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) on the afternoon of October 7, Category 1 Hurricane Rachel was located about 800 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California, with maximum sustained winds near 80 mph, moving west-northwest. Rachel is forecast to slow down late this week, make a sharp turn to the northeast, and accelerate toward Baja California and Southern California, possibly approaching the Southern California coast in weakened form this weekend.

No coastal watches or warnings are in effect yet, but swells generated by Rachel will build along the Southern California and northern Baja coasts through the weekend, likely causing life-threatening surf and rip currents. San Diego County has issued a beach hazards statement and a coastal flood advisory. Beachgoers should heed lifeguards and the latest weather updates, as the track may still shift.
