Oklahoma Emergency Management Director Annie Mack Vest to Depart Oct. 30
OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma Emergency Management Director Annie Mack Vest will leave her post Oct. 30, News 9 reported Oct. 7, following the Oct. 6 announcement of her departure.
Vest has led the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management through multiple severe weather seasons in one of the most disaster-prone states in the country. Her tenure included coordinating state responses to destructive tornadoes, wildfires and flooding that have repeatedly struck Oklahoma, as well as overseeing the state's emergency operations center during major disaster declarations.
Colleagues credited Vest with strengthening partnerships between the state and county emergency managers, and with modernizing the agency's communications during fast-moving disasters. Oklahoma sits in the heart of Tornado Alley, and the agency she led is the nerve center for the state's response whenever severe weather threatens.
The governor's office said a search for her successor was underway and that an interim leadership plan would ensure continuity. Emergency management officials said the transition was deliberately timed ahead of the fall severe weather season, Oklahoma's second peak for tornadoes.
Vest did not immediately announce her next plans. Her departure comes as states nationwide face growing demands on emergency management agencies from more frequent and intense disasters.
A successor is expected to be named in November to align with the new fiscal year budget cycle.
