2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry: Two Scholars Crack the "Left-Hand, Right-Hand" Molecular Mystery

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced in Stockholm on October 7 that the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to French chemist Henri Kagan (95, Université Paris-Saclay) and Japanese chemist Kenso Soai (76, Tokyo University of Science), for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.

Their work solves a century-old mystery — how homochirality can emerge spontaneously — and is widely used in the precise synthesis of pharmaceutical molecules. This year's chemistry prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor. The literature prize follows on Thursday and the peace prize on Friday.
