Missouri Unveils Energy Plan With Nuclear Power at Its Core
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri released its new state energy plan Oct. 7, placing nuclear power at the center of its strategy to meet surging electricity demand from data centers and manufacturing, KBIA reported.
The plan, developed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' Division of Energy, calls for an "all-of-the-above" approach that prioritizes expanding nuclear generation — including advanced small modular reactors — alongside natural gas, renewables and grid modernization. State officials said the strategy responds to a wave of proposed data center projects and industrial growth that is reshaping power demand across the Midwest.
Missouri currently operates one nuclear plant, the Callaway Energy Center in Callaway County, which has provided carbon-free baseload power since the 1980s. The plan positions the state to pursue additional nuclear capacity in the coming decade, potentially including small modular reactors that advocates say are safer, cheaper and faster to build than traditional large reactors.
The release follows a national trend of states racing to secure baseload power for energy-hungry technology infrastructure. Utilities across the country have warned that data center demand could strain grids, and several states have moved to streamline permitting for new generation.
Environmental and consumer groups said they would scrutinize the plan's details, particularly the costs of new nuclear construction and who would pay for it. State officials said public input would shape implementation in the months ahead.
State energy officials said the next step is working with utilities, communities and tribes on a detailed implementation roadmap, including siting criteria and cost-sharing mechanisms.
