Western Massachusetts Voters Approve $236M for New Tech School, Reject District Merger
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mass. — Voters in Franklin County, Massachusetts, have approved a $236 million borrowing authorization to build a new Franklin County Technical School, replacing the 50-year-old building in Turners Falls, while rejecting an effort to merge two regional school districts, WAMC reported Oct. 7.
According to unofficial results compiled by The Greenfield Recorder, all 19 towns in the technical school's district voted Tuesday to approve the funding — a striking show of consensus in a rural county where tax increases are rarely popular. About half of the borrowing is expected to be reimbursed by the Massachusetts School Building Authority, leaving the 19 towns to shoulder the remaining roughly $122.8 million over the life of the bonds.
Officials have said the borrowing will translate into higher property taxes across the rural county, and a "tax increase calculator" for residents is available on the project's website so homeowners can estimate their share. Supporters argued the half-century-old building is functionally obsolete, with outdated shops and labs that no longer meet the needs of modern career and technical education.
The new school is expected to expand capacity for programs in high-demand trades — from advanced manufacturing and health assisting to electrical and plumbing — fields where western Massachusetts employers report chronic worker shortages.
In a separate question, six towns weighed merging the Gill-Montague and Pioneer Valley Regional school districts, a consolidation pitched as a way to stabilize enrollment and finances. As of Wednesday morning, only Gill and Montague appeared to approve forming a new "Great River Regional School District," while majorities in the other participating towns rejected the merger, dooming the plan.
