Tropical Storm Isaias Forms; Southwest Georgia Braces for Heavy Rain
ALBANY, Ga. — Tropical Storm Isaias formed Oct. 7 over the Atlantic, prompting forecasters to warn that Southwest Georgia could face heavy rainfall, flash flooding and gusty winds in the coming days, Georgia media reported.
The National Hurricane Center named the system as it organized over warm Atlantic waters, and early forecast tracks showed it curving toward the southeastern United States. Emergency officials in Southwest Georgia — including Dougherty County and the Albany area — urged residents to monitor forecasts closely, clear drainage ditches and gutters, and prepare emergency kits.
Isaias is the latest in an unusually active Atlantic hurricane season that has already strained emergency resources across the Southeast. Georgia's Emergency Management Agency said it was coordinating with county emergency managers as the storm's track and intensity became clearer, and that swift-water rescue teams were on standby.
Farmers in the region's agricultural belt were watching the storm with particular concern: heavy rain at harvest time can damage peanut, cotton and pecan crops still in the field. Extension agents advised growers to secure equipment and move harvested crops under cover where possible.
Forecasters said the heaviest rain was expected to arrive over the weekend, with some areas potentially seeing several inches. Residents were urged to avoid driving through flooded roads and to report downed power lines to utilities.
The state agriculture department reminded farmers to move livestock to high ground and secure greenhouses and storage facilities.
