Congo Ebola Outbreak Spreads: Kenya Confirms First Case as U.S. Leans on Travel Curbs
The Ebola outbreak declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo in mid-May, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, continues to spread. The WHO calls it the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record, with more than 7,000 cases and over 4,000 deaths, a fatality rate near 48%.
On Oct. 6–7, Kenya confirmed its first imported case: a patient who flew in from Congo via Uganda and later died, underscoring regional spillover risk.
Since July, the U.S. has enforced a "no-board" rule barring air travel to the U.S. for anyone who has been in Congo within 21 days, and maintains a 50-bed isolation facility at a Kenyan air base. With USAID shuttered and the U.S. out of the WHO, Reuters reports Washington's role has centered on border controls rather than aid. (GSM, from Reuters reporting)
