Columbus Opens Applications for 15-Member Community Crisis Response Advisory Board

COLUMBUS — The City of Columbus announced a new 15-member Community Crisis Response Advisory Board, with applications open on the city's website from October 6 to 23. According to The Columbus Dispatch, the board will provide public oversight and policy input for the city's planned non-police crisis response teams, a reform authorized by voters who approved Issue 5 with about 77% support.

Under the plan, Columbus will field professional non-police response teams — handling calls such as mental-health crises — by February 2028, expanding to round-the-clock service by February 1, 2030. The city said the advisory board will include community representatives and professionals from mental-health and public-safety fields.

Advocates including Chana Wiley have long pushed for non-law-enforcement responses to mental-health calls. Mayor Andrew Ginther said the voter-mandated reform aims to give residents in crisis a more appropriate professional response while freeing police to focus on violent crime.

Under the approved framework, the advisory board will help set service standards and training requirements for the non-police teams, review response data and case records on a regular basis, and file public reports to the city council. Supporters say seating people with lived mental-health experience, social workers and neighborhood representatives in the oversight process will help the new teams earn residents' trust; some in law enforcement caution that call types and safety protocols must be drawn clearly so responders are not sent uninformed into dangerous scenes. Columbus is not alone — many U.S. cities are piloting clinician- and social-worker-led crisis response, with results still debated. The city said board selection will balance race, geography and expertise, and that the first meeting will be announced once members are chosen.
