Rays Beat Yankees 5-2 for 2-0 ALDS Lead Behind Palacios' Two-Run Single
The Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 5-2 in Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Monday night, October 5, in St. Petersburg, taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series and moving within one win of the AL Championship Series.
The turning point came in the fifth inning, when Tampa Bay scored four runs, capped by Richie Palacios' two-run single off reliever Brent Headrick with two outs and runners on second and third, stretching the lead to 5-1. Palacios, who grew up in Brooklyn as a Yankees fan, also doubled off ace Gerrit Cole in the series opener. Yankees starter Cam Schlittler, a leading Cy Young Award candidate, was pulled after just 76 pitches, and New York committed four errors on the night. Rays starter Freddy Peralta lasted 4.2 innings, allowing one run, and praised his lineup's aggressive approach after the game.
Game 3 shifts to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, where the Rays will try to complete the sweep and move closer to their first World Series appearance since 2020.
