Boston Puts $1 Million Behind Black Men's Health, Seeks Community Proposals to Close a Nine-Year Life-Expectancy Gap
BOSTON — Mayor Michelle Wu, the City of Boston and the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) on Tuesday, October 6 issued a Request for Proposals committing $1 million to improve Black men's health as part of the city's Live Long and Well population health equity agenda.
Earlier this year, BPHC committed the $1 million to help close the nine-year life expectancy gap between Black men and other men in Boston. Under the RFP, up to four qualified organizations will receive a maximum of $250,000 each for initiatives that improve life expectancy, chronic disease outcomes and access to care for Black men. The solicitation was informed by the Health Commission's Black Men's Health Activation Summit.
Wu said the city's mission is for every resident to live long and well, and that Boston looks forward to partnering with the community organizations that can lead the work of reducing disparities. Public Health Commissioner Dr. Bisola Ojikutu called the nine-year gap "not just a statistic — it is a call to action," saying the funding puts resources directly into the hands of trusted community partners to expand prevention, strengthen connections to care and address the conditions that contribute to premature death. The goal, she said, is not simply to document the gap but to close it.
Racial disparities in life expectancy persist across major U.S. cities, driven by chronic disease burdens, uneven access to care and economic and environmental conditions. Boston's approach — dedicated funding paired with community-led program design — is intended to turn a stated equity commitment into measurable projects. Application details and deadlines are posted on the city's official website.
