Ronaldo Apologizes for Leaving Portugal Camp, Accuses Coach Jorge Jesus of Broken Promises
Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, released a statement of more than 2,000 words Tuesday apologizing for walking out on Portugal's national team in late September — while accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking promises.
Ronaldo said he endorsed Jesus's appointment after the World Cup and that Jesus convinced him to continue internationally with a workload plan: play the first and last matches of the window, skip Norway and Denmark in between.
But before the Sept. 27 Norway match, an assistant told him to prepare for 30 minutes. After warming up, Ronaldo never entered the game and stormed down the tunnel at full time. "The coach had broken his word to me," he wrote.
He had started and played 65 minutes in the Sept. 24 win over Wales, then left the Copenhagen camp on Sept. 30, missing the Denmark match. (Via USA Today)
