DOJ Plans Record 1,000+ Election Monitors for November Midterms
The Justice Department plans to deploy more than 1,000 election monitors at polling places nationwide on Nov. 3, which officials describe as the largest election-observer operation in the department's history — drawing fresh voting-rights scrutiny.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the initiative in a Fox News interview, arguing DOJ election monitoring has been routine for decades under administrations of both parties to enforce voting-rights protections. Critics question whether the unprecedented scale could blur the line between protecting voters and policing elections.
Unlike past efforts focused on ballot access — discrimination, language assistance, disability accommodations and voter intimidation — Civil Rights Division officials have also pointed to jurisdictions with potential voter-fraud concerns as factors guiding the deployment. The department says its monitors are intended to ensure compliance with federal election law. (Oct. 6 reports)
