Kayaker Bitten Twice by Shark Off Malibu; Hospitalized After Fishing Accident
A kayaker was bitten twice by a shark off Paradise Cove along the Malibu coast at about 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4. According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the man had hooked a large shark while fishing and was attacked while trying to release it, suffering two bites to his leg.
Another vessel brought the victim to shore, where he was treated by lifeguards and transported to the hospital. The fire department initially responded to it as a shark attack but later described it as a fishing accident. It is the fourth shark incident in California this year, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Lifeguards urge beachgoers to stay near staffed lifeguard towers.
