Video Shows Santa Ana Officers Beating and Dragging Suspect; Mayor Promises Review
A widely shared video shows Santa Ana, California police officers dragging a man to the ground and repeatedly striking him during a traffic arrest. Santa Ana Mayor Valerie Amezcua told ABC7 she would continue looking into the incident; police PIO Natalie Garcia said the department is reviewing all available information, adding that "as with all use-of-force incidents, we take these matters seriously and will let the facts guide our review and conclusions."
The man, Lopez, has been charged with felony and misdemeanor counts of resisting an officer, walking in the roadway, and using marijuana on school or daycare property. He has been held since Thursday, Oct. 1, and a judge set bail at $20,000 at his court appearance Monday. His lawyer Kremer believes the case should be thrown out. Police have not yet released full body-camera footage.
