National Promises $809 Million Christchurch Northern Motorway Extension
New Zealand's governing National Party announced on 5 October 2026 that it would fund an $809 million extension of the Christchurch Northern Motorway. RNZ reported the promise the same day as part of the party's transport and infrastructure campaign platform, aimed at improving capacity and safety on the corridor serving the growing commuter population of North Canterbury.
The northern corridor links central Christchurch with satellite towns in the Waimakariri district and is one of the South Island's busiest commuter routes, where peak-hour congestion and crash risk have long frustrated residents and freight operators.
