NYC Council Grills AI Giants Under Oath on Liability for AI Harm
On October 5, the New York City Council held a full committee hearing with executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta testifying under oath. Asked by Speaker Julie Menin whether companies would bear legal liability if AI caused major economic loss or deaths, none gave a clear answer.
The council is also reviewing 10 AI-related bills, covering human kill-switches for AI, third-party verification, chatbot privacy protections, and bans on unauthorized AI depictions of public officials.
