Washington Seeks Additional $13.2 Million in Federal Wildfire Recovery Aid

OLYMPIA — Governor Bob Ferguson announced on October 7 an additional request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for up to $13.2 million in Public Assistance funding for permanent repairs to public infrastructure damaged by this summer's wildfires in Central and Eastern Washington, including roads, bridges and utilities.

The new application brings Washington's total request for federal Public Assistance for this disaster to more than $133 million. The latest request covers 11 counties — Asotin, Chelan, Columbia, Douglas, Ferry, Grant, Okanogan, Spokane, Stevens, Whitman and Yakima — plus the Spokane Tribe of Indians.

In late July and early August, multiple huge wildfires raged through Central and Eastern Washington, destroying hundreds of homes, forcing mass evacuations of homes and hospitals, causing widespread power outages and injuring dozens of firefighters. Ferguson had previously requested a federal major disaster declaration on September 28. "Federal assistance is essential to our state's recovery from these historic wildfires," Ferguson said.
