GSM News

A Fresh Burst of Heavy Rain, October 4–6, Floods Bangkok Again as the Disaster Enters Its Third Week

BANGKOK — A fresh burst of heavy rain from October 4 to 6 struck central Thailand again, bringing serious flooding back to multiple districts of Bangkok as well as Samut Prakan and Prachin Buri, with residents of low-lying neighbourhoods moved into temporary shelters. The flood disaster that began on September 16 thereby entered its third week, with no immediate end in sight.

Bangkok was already strained in late September: after close to 300–320 millimetres of rain in three days, the capital was declared a disaster zone, and a swollen Chao Phraya, tidal backwater and ageing drainage meant water lingered long after the rain stopped. The weekend's new downpours poured water on an unhealed wound — streets turned to canals, commutes broke down and shops were inundated across the city.

Forecasters expect further heavy rain over central Thailand in the days ahead. The official response is running on two tracks: rescue and recovery — shelters, relief distribution and clean-up — and preparations for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings opening in Bangkok in about ten days. Both are unfolding in the same city in the same weeks, the defining image of this year's Bangkok rainy season.

For the Chinese community, the old city and Chinatown districts sit low and have flooded in year after year of rainy seasons. Sandbags, raised stock and adjusted hours are the rainy-season routine for shops along Yaowarat Road — and this year's season is not over yet.

No separate casualty toll was published for this round of rain; the nationwide flood death toll was updated to 31 on October 5 (see the October 5 report). Figures are as officially released by Thai authorities.
