Swedish Left Party MP Ali Receives 'Leave Parliament' Threat at Home; Security Service Takes Over Investigation
On Sunday, October 4, Mohamed Abdukardir Ali, a Left Party member of Sweden's parliament, shared a photograph on social media of a threatening letter sent to his home. The newspaper Aftonbladet reported that the letter read: "Leave parliament or we will help you do it."
Left Party secretary Maria Forsberg confirmed to media that Ali had received threatening correspondence at home, that the threat had been reported to police, and that the party would give Ali its full support. She said threats against politicians damage democracy.
Sweden's Security Service, Säpo, has since taken over the investigation into suspected unlawful threats. Police confirmed the takeover to Sveriges Radio's P4 Dalarna but would not publicly identify the person concerned. Säpo told Aftonbladet that the complainant is someone under its protection and that a national security prosecutor is leading the investigation.
Ali was elected for Dalarna in the parliamentary election of September 13. His election has also been linked in reporting to a separate investigation into suspected electoral fraud in Borlänge, centred on how he unexpectedly overtook other candidates on his party's ballot in personal votes. Prosecutors have said the case could put as many as 11 parliamentary seats in play if the Election Review Board orders a re-run. Ali has denied any involvement and has requested two weeks' leave from parliament; TT news agency reported that he had not been formally notified of criminal suspicion.
Beyond the Borlänge case, Stockholm police announced in late September that they had opened preliminary investigations into five complaints of election fraud around the capital, two of them involving suspected vote-buying.
