Peru Holds Nationwide Regional and Municipal Elections: 26 Million Voters Choose 13,123 Local Officials
LIMA - Peru held nationwide regional and municipal elections on Sunday, October 4, with more than 26 million eligible voters choosing 13,123 regional and local officials for the 2027-2030 term, including regional governors, mayors and councillors. Polls were open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., under heavy security, with the armed forces deploying more than 41,000 troops.
Early exit estimates pointed to fragmented results: Datum's rapid counts put Rafael Lopez Aliaga ahead in the Lima mayoral race with about 31.2% and Veronica Mendoza leading in Cusco with 33.7%, though those figures are provisional and subject to the ONPE's processing of official records. Estimates suggested many regions did not reach the 30% threshold for a first-round win, sending governorships to runoffs.
The National Jury of Elections set regional runoffs for November 29, while the ONPE formally requested a shift to December 6, citing tight printing and distribution logistics for materials. Observers described election day as broadly peaceful, though isolated incidents required local responses, including a large wildfire in Miraflores, an explosive attack that suspended voting in Sorochuco, and 33 detentions for electoral offences, with investigations continuing.
The vote was the first electoral test for President Fujimori and the first local cycle under the restored bicameral system. A fragmented local map means the national government must work with a patchwork of regional and municipal administrations, and national agendas from security to El Nino response will depend on how that cooperation works.
