Nebraska Governor Declares Emergency for Southeast Nebraska After Record Flooding Rains
LINCOLN — Governor Jim Pillen declared an emergency for southeast Nebraska on October 2 after heavy rain and severe flooding struck the region. Record-setting rainfall was reported across the area, and stranded motorists were rescued from flooded roadways in some locations.
On Thursday, the governor joined the assistant director of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nebraska National Guard, Lancaster County and the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District to tour affected areas in northern Lancaster County and receive a briefing on conditions, where he signed the emergency proclamation.
The declaration allows the use of state resources and requires state and federal agencies to cooperate with and support the adjutant general, who also serves as NEMA director. NEMA is working with FEMA, the Small Business Administration and the Natural Resources Conservation Service to compile damage assessments, which will determine what level of assistance is available to impacted individuals and businesses.
