Montreal-Raised Juno-Winning Singer Sass Jordan Dies at 65, Colleagues Remember Her
Canadian music lost one of its distinctive voices on October 4, 2026, when Montreal-raised, Juno Award-winning rock singer Sass Jordan died at 65. CTV News reported the death that day, and colleagues across the music industry paid tribute to a performer known for her raspy, powerful voice.
Born in England and raised in Montreal, Jordan broke through in the late 1980s with the album Tell Somebody and rose to prominence in the 1990s with Racine and hit singles in Canada and abroad, winning a Juno Award. She later served as a judge on Canadian Idol, bringing her stage experience to a new generation of singers. In follow-up coverage, CTV quoted colleagues remembering her sharp ears and honesty on the show.
Her career spanned studio albums, touring and musical theatre, and she remained active in performance and recording in recent years. For many Canadians who grew up with radio in the 1970s through 1990s, her songs form part of a shared musical memory, and Montreal musicians credited her with showing how local rock singers could reach a national market.
The family released no further details. Music organizations and fans continued sharing live footage and signature songs on social media, and several stations scheduled tribute segments over the weekend. Her passing also renewed discussion in the industry about preserving the archives and work of Canada's homegrown musicians.
