Supreme Court Opens New Term With Big Oil's Bid to Toss Climate Suits

The U.S. Supreme Court opens its new nine-month term on Monday, Oct. 5, hearing ExxonMobil and Suncor Energy's bid to scuttle a lawsuit by Boulder, Colorado, seeking damages for harms caused by climate change. Boulder's city and county governments accuse the two oil companies of helping drive climate change and misleading the public, and seek payment for infrastructure repairs, environmental damage, emergency management and public-health harms.

The Trump administration backs the companies, arguing federal law precludes the state-law claims. Nearly 60 state and local governments have filed similar suits; a ruling for the companies could lead to many of them being dismissed.

The justices' 6-3 conservative majority will also hear major cases this term involving the administration's immigration policies and state bans on assault-style rifles.
