West Virginia Falls 45-42 to Iowa State as Rodriguez Blasts "Atrocious" Defense
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia dropped a 45-42 shootout to Iowa State at home on Oct. 3, and head coach Rich Rodriguez didn't mince words afterward, calling his team's defensive performance "atrocious," Heavy reported.
The offenses traded blows all afternoon, with the score seesawing back and forth. West Virginia's 42 points should have been enough to win, but the defense surrendered 45, failing to get stops when it mattered most. Rodriguez pointedly criticized the defensive scheme overseen by coordinator Zac Alley, calling the performance unacceptable.
"I'm very disappointed in the defense," Rodriguez said. "We have to fix these things in practice, or it's going to be a long season." His blunt remarks sparked debate among fans — some applauding the candor, others worried public criticism could rattle the locker room.
The loss in a key conference game clouds West Virginia's season outlook. The Mountaineers go on the road next, with all eyes on whether the defense can bounce back.
