Tennessee Prison Chief Resigns After Botched Execution

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced on Oct. 3 that Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada has resigned, following the state's botched execution of death-row inmate Christa Pike, Reuters reported. The governor accepted Strada's resignation.

Pike was among the most high-profile inmates on Tennessee's death row. The scheduled execution failed due to technical and procedural problems, exposing the corrections department to intense pressure from victims' families, the legal community and civil rights groups, with its protocols and staff training called into question.

Gov. Lee said in a statement that Tennessee must ensure rigor and humanity in its judicial processes, and that the department needs new leadership to rebuild public trust. Strada had overseen multiple reforms of the state's prison system, but the failure at the critical moment of the execution proved to be the tipping point.

Tennessee has paused further executions pending a full review of its procedures. The state said outside experts will be brought in to evaluate current protocols, and a new commissioner will be named in due course.
