Bay Area Heat Advisory: Inland Temperatures Near 100 as Spare the Air Alert Issued
SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA — The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the Bay Area over the first weekend of October, with inland highs near or above 100°F while San Francisco itself reached about 75°F. According to CBS Bay Area, via KION, the autumn heat wave was driven by offshore high pressure, and forecasters urged residents — especially crowds at outdoor events and households without air conditioning — to take precautions.
Alongside the heat, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a Spare the Air Alert: stagnant conditions were raising ozone levels, sensitive groups were advised to limit prolonged outdoor exertion, and the public was asked to drive less to help clear the air. The heat-plus-ozone combination is a familiar early-fall pattern in the region.
Forecasters said the heat would ease after the weekend as onshore flow returned and cooled both the coast and inland valleys. Health officials reminded residents that dizziness or nausea can signal heat illness and called for moving to shade, drinking water and seeking care if symptoms worsen.
The Spare the Air program, run by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District since 1991, issues alerts whenever ozone or particulates are forecast to exceed health standards, asking residents to carpool, take transit or work from home and to skip wood fires. Meteorologists attributed the early-October heat to inland high pressure and offshore flow — the same pattern that raises wildfire risk across Northern California — and fire officials urged care with any ignition sources in the hot, dry conditions. Counties posted extended hours for cooling centers and libraries over the hot weekend. For Bay Area residents used to cool autumns, the October heat wave was another reminder that California's hot season is stretching longer.
