Vermont Governor Asks Federal Government to Double Refugee Resettlement Cap to 250

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott wrote to the Trump administration on October 2 asking that the state's refugee resettlement allocation for fiscal 2026 be raised from 125 to 250, WCAX reported.

Scott said Vermont communities and resettlement agencies are ready to welcome more refugees, whose arrival would help ease the state's labor shortage and bring vitality to local communities. Vermont, one of the least populous states, faces both an aging population and worker shortages.

Under the federal process, governors may recommend resettlement numbers to the federal government; the president sets the final national ceiling. Scott has supported higher refugee admissions for Vermont for years, calling it a pragmatic answer to demographic challenges.

Local nonprofits handle most resettlement work in Vermont, providing language training, job placement, and housing assistance. The governor's office said that with a higher allocation, the state will coordinate with agencies to prepare for new arrivals and help refugee families integrate into their communities.
