GSM News

Conservation Groups Sue to Block Blasting for Road in Gate Canyon, Citing Historic Inscriptions

Conservation groups sued the federal government this week seeking to block blasting for a road project in Utah's Gate Canyon, which they say would destroy 19th-century Buffalo Soldiers inscriptions and Native American rock art, Reuters reported.

The Buffalo Soldiers were Black cavalry regiments formed after the Civil War; their desert inscriptions are considered significant African American historic resources. Nine Mile Canyon is famed for dense Native American rock art, sometimes called the world's longest art gallery.

The suit alleges federal agencies approved the road without adequately assessing cultural-resource damage, violating the National Historic Preservation Act. Plaintiffs seek an injunction halting blasting pending compliance review.

The federal government has not responded to the suit. In recent years, multiple Western energy and infrastructure projects have faced lawsuits over cultural resources, and balancing historic preservation with development remains a running dispute.
