Toyota Thailand to Halt Three Plants from October 5 to 10 as Floods Disrupt Suppliers, Parts and Commutes
BANGKOK — Toyota Motor Thailand announced on October 2 that it will suspend production at its three Thai plants for six days, from Monday, October 5 to Saturday, October 10. The plants are located in Samut Prakan, Chachoengsao and Chon Buri. The company said the halt was forced by flood impacts on its suppliers: parts deliveries have been disrupted and employees' commutes obstructed, leaving the plants unable to operate normally.
Thailand's floods have killed at least 23 people since September 16 (as of September 29) and affected at least 2.7 million people. Toyota is the first big name to put a corporate face on the disaster's economic cost. Thailand is Southeast Asia's car-making hub — the 'Detroit of Asia' label rests on its complete parts supply chain — and this year's floods have struck exactly that chain, inundating supplier plants and logistics routes. Toyota stressed the stoppage is temporary, that further arrangements will depend on the flood situation and supply-chain recovery, and that it is coordinating with suppliers to minimise the impact on deliveries to customers.
For Thailand's economy, the auto industry is a pillar, with vehicles and parts accounting for a significant share of exports. A six-day halt at one maker alone would be manageable; the industry's fear is that if the floods spread, more carmakers and suppliers will be forced to follow, amplifying the shock along the chain. Assessments by the Federation of Thai Industries in the following days (see October 7 and 8) confirmed the impact was indeed spreading.
Samut Prakan, Chachoengsao and Chon Buri — home to Toyota's three plants — are industrial heartlands of the Eastern Economic Corridor and the Bangkok metropolitan region, and also host many parts and logistics businesses invested by ethnic Chinese entrepreneurs. How deeply the floodwaters soak the industrial belt will decide whether this stoppage lasts six days or much longer.
