San Diego Swelters in Mid-90s Heat, Closing In on October Record
SAN DIEGO COUNTY — San Diego, known for its mild climate, baked in unusual heat on October 2, with the city's high reaching the mid-90s and closing in on the record for the date. According to The Weather Channel (October 2), inland high pressure and offshore winds drove the spike, coastal neighborhoods that are normally cooled by sea breezes saw sharp warming, and inland valleys ran even hotter.
Forecasters noted that San Diego's average October high is in the 70s, making the reading distinctly abnormal. Beaches and parks drew crowds, and health officials urged residents to stay cool, avoid midday activity outdoors and check on older adults and people with chronic conditions. Cities across the county opened libraries and other public buildings as cooling spaces, as is customary during heat events.
The heat was part of the same weather system affecting all of Southern California. Onshore flow returning over the weekend was expected to bring temperatures back toward seasonal norms, though inland areas will cool more slowly. The National Weather Service's San Diego office is posting updated advisories.
San Diego prides itself on mild weather — locals joke about "May Gray and June Gloom" — so a mid-90s reading set off a wave of social-media posts, many showing car thermometers. The National Weather Service in San Diego cautioned that even at the beach, the mix of strong sun and heat dehydrates people quickly, and lifeguards added patrols at popular beaches; inland spots such as El Cajon ran hotter still, and school districts were advised to adjust outdoor activities. The same inland high pressure and offshore flow driving the heat in Los Angeles and Orange County was responsible here, stripping the whole Southern California coast of its usual sea-breeze relief at once. As the high moves east over the weekend and onshore flow returns, San Diego should settle back into the 70s, though forecasters warn brief October warm-ups can still recur.
