First Fridays Return to Phoenix's Roosevelt Row Under New Vendor Pilot
Phoenix's First Fridays art walk returned to Roosevelt Row on October 2 under a new pilot program that brings vendors back to the downtown arts district for the first time since street vending was halted last spring.
Under the model approved by the City Council last month, there will be no street closures or pop-up street markets. Instead, galleries and businesses host art and vendors on their own property, with business owners applying for permits to host vendors themselves. Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation board member Cindy Dach said the redesign aims to return the decades-old event to its roots, with the artist experience front and center; Deputy City Manager Alan Stephenson noted the event's growth had created crowd-control and safety problems, including shootings.
First Fridays, held on the first Friday of each month, is one of the longest-running art walks in Phoenix and a key showcase for local artists and small businesses.
