Priscilla Till announced October 2 she will run for governor of Mississippi in 2027, the Clarion Ledger reported. She is a distant relative of Emmett Till, the Black teenager whose 1955 lynching became a turning point of the civil-rights movement.
Till said her campaign will focus on education funding, healthcare access, and economic development. The Till family has long been involved in civil-rights commemoration and education.
Mississippi is among the nation's most conservative states, with Republicans holding a clear edge in statewide races. Till's bid is seen as Democrats' attempt to rebuild in the state, and her family history brings national attention to the campaign.
The 2027 primary and general-election calendar has not been set. Other potential candidates have been floated in media coverage, and the field remains fluid. Till said she will tour the state in the coming months to hear voters' concerns.
