Severe Thunderstorms Snarl DFW Airport, Forcing Hundreds of Cancellations
Severe thunderstorms fed by moisture from tropical system Polo slammed North Texas on October 2, throwing Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport — one of the busiest hubs in the United States — into chaos. Flight-tracking tallies put disruptions at roughly a thousand delays and more than three hundred cancellations for the day, with over a third of departures running late, making DFW the hardest-hit airport in the country.
The Federal Aviation Administration placed DFW under a ground delay program, holding departures an average of about 60 to 90 minutes. American Airlines, whose flights account for roughly 80 percent of DFW's schedule, absorbed the bulk of the disruption, and delays cascaded across its national network to Miami, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, stranding connecting passengers.
Slow-moving storm cells brought heavy rain and low visibility to the airport area, cutting runway throughput and flooding some access roads. Airlines waived change fees and urged travelers to check flight status before heading to the airport, while recovery stretched beyond the storm itself as crews and aircraft sat out of position.
