Sweden's New Young-Adult Permit Rules Take Effect October 1 Amid Deportation Row
New Swedish Migration Agency rules for young adults took effect on October 1, allowing extensions of family-based residence permits after age 18 and temporarily covering some people who already have deportation orders. The agency has resumed examining cases that were paused.
The dispute concerns young adults who previously held permits through a parent but reached adulthood before securing a continued right to stay. Migration Minister Johan Forssell defended the changes, saying they allow extensions of family-based permits, and called the opposition's proposed stop law unclear.
The Left Party's migration spokesperson, Samuel Gonzalez Westling, warned that long processing times could still leave applicants unable to extend permits in time, and rejected the deportations as immoral. Opposition parties have kept pressure on the government over individual cases and a legislative pause.
The Migration Agency says its aim is to let all affected young adults apply and be assessed without processing time determining the outcome. A temporary route to apply on another basis from inside Sweden runs until December 2027, though applicants must still meet that permit's conditions.
