UC San Diego Pauses at Least Five HIV Clinical Trials as Federal Funding Nears Its End Date
The University of California, San Diego has paused at least five clinical trials designed to cure or control HIV, according to the Associated Press, after the National Institutes of Health issued guidance that new enrollments should be put on hold.
Under the guidance, scientists should temporarily hold off on launching new studies that had not yet enrolled participants and that would not be complete by November 30, 2027, when the NIH's current funding for its HIV clinical trial networks is set to expire. The instruction was delivered on October 2 to the NIH's four HIV clinical trials networks — the ACTG, HPTN, HVTN and IMPAACT networks, which study HIV treatment, prevention and vaccines, as well as care for children and pregnant people.
The pause comes as the networks' funding renewal process has stalled. Notices of funding opportunity to renew the networks, expected by late August, remain under review at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which has not confirmed whether the renewal process will move forward. Because large trials take years to design and complete, new studies that cannot finish before the November 2027 funding deadline may face long delays.
The instruction applies to new studies that have not begun enrolling, rather than to trials already under way. Even so, the uncertain federal funding outlook is now affecting research scheduling at institutions including UC San Diego.
