Sacramento extends cooling-center operations through Oct. 10 with free rides to respite sites
With a National Weather Service heat advisory in effect, the City of Sacramento activated the Outreach and Engagement Center and the North 5th Street Navigation Center as cooling centers and extended operations through Oct. 10. The Auburn Boulevard OEC runs from 10 a.m. Oct. 3 to 8 a.m. Oct. 10, accepts walk-ups and pets, and can accommodate up to 50 guests; the North 5th Street site is open 1–8 p.m. Oct. 3–9 for up to 20 adults and does not allow pets.
The city said libraries and community centers remain available during normal hours as places to cool off, and Sacramento Regional Transit is providing no-cost rides to and from the activated respite centers for riders who show the program flyer. Residents who need help reaching a site can call 211, and the city will keep monitoring the forecast and site capacity to decide whether operations should be extended again.
