Detroit Leaders Urge Every Student to Show Up for Count Day on Oct. 7
The City of Detroit joined the Detroit Public Schools Community District and charter school leaders in urging every student to be in class on Wednesday, October 7, for Fall Count Day. City officials noted that attendance counted on that single day determines about 90 percent of state funding for schools, so the mayor's office took an unusually active role, backing free student bus rides, transit safety staff and expanded after-school programs to remove barriers. For families with children in local public schools, the day directly affects classroom resources for the rest of the year.
