ACL Fest Opens in the Rain as Zilker Park Lawn Damage Sparks Debate
The 24th Austin City Limits Music Festival opened October 2 at Zilker Park after heavy midweek rain turned the grounds muddy. The Austin area picked up roughly two to four inches of rain in two days, with some spots near six inches, making this the sixth-wettest ACL on record by opening day. Organizers cleared drains in advance, advised ponchos and boots since umbrellas are banned inside, and kept the show on schedule under a flood watch. City Council Member Ryan Alter called the damage to the Great Lawn unacceptable. Under its agreement with the city, the festival must restore the park to Parks Department specifications and pay for damage, a repair effort that could take weeks.
