Braves Drop NLDS Opener 5-3 to Dodgers as Skubal Dominates in Los Angeles
The Atlanta Braves opened their National League Division Series with a 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, October 3. Coming off a champagne celebration after eliminating Philadelphia in the Wild Card Series, Atlanta leaned on a planned bullpen game: opener Dylan Dodd delivered three scoreless innings, but Teoscar Hernández hit a two-run homer off Víctor Mederos in the fourth, and Kyle Tucker and Max Muncy went deep off AJ Smith-Shawver in the sixth to break the game open.
Two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, making his first postseason start as a Dodger, struck out seven over six innings, allowing one run on two hits — a 421-foot solo homer by Sean Murphy. Braves manager Walt Weiss acknowledged his club had "emptied the tank" on Thursday night in the previous round, making a road comeback chase an uphill task. Atlanta, which used 11 pitchers in the Wild Card Series and carried 13 arms on its NLDS roster, must now find answers against Los Angeles' rotation if it hopes to bring the series back home.
